Inspiring Future Talent at Milbank and Investing In The Next Generation
As we approach our 80th anniversary next year, we’re looking not only at how far we’ve come, but at what the future holds for our industry. Inspiring the next generation of construction professionals is an important part of that future, and recent visits from apprentices and work experience students have given us an opportunity to share our knowledge, showcase our industry, highlilght our commitment to sustainability and encourage young people to explore the opportunities available.
The construction industry is evolving, with sustainability, innovation and changing building requirements continuing to shape how we design, manufacture and build. Meeting these challenges will require the right skills, fresh perspectives and a new generation of people ready to take the industry forward.
At Milbank Concrete Products, we believe that helping to develop this future talent starts with creating opportunities for young people to experience the industry first-hand.
Over recent months, we’ve welcomed apprentices from Morgan Sindall to our site, alongside students attending a Work Experience (WEx) day organised via Morgan Sindall and Essex County Council, giving both groups an insight into precast concrete manufacturing and the people, processes and expertise behind our products.

Bringing construction to life
We wanted to create an engaging and informative experience that went beyond presentations, giving students and apprentices the chance to see how our business operates and understand how our products contribute to construction projects.
Both visits included talks from our team, a tour of our factory and insights into the different stages involved in manufacturing precast concrete products. These sessions offered an opportunity to learn more about our work, ask questions and discover the range of skills and career paths that support our operations.
We also shared more about our approach to sustainability, highlighting the steps we’re taking to reduce our environmental impact and the important role that innovation will play in the future of construction.
A particular highlight was our practical Beam & Block flooring activity, which gave participants the chance to get hands-on and see how the individual components come together to create a complete flooring system. The activity proved popular with both the students and apprentices, providing a practical demonstration of what they had learnt and helping them understand how our products work beyond the factory environment. For us, this is an important part of engaging with young people. By giving them the opportunity to see, touch and understand what we do, we can make the industry more accessible and demonstrate the variety of opportunities available.

Why the next generation matters
Attracting and developing new talent is essential to the long-term success of the construction industry. As the sector continues to adapt to new technologies, more sustainable building practices and evolving customer requirements, we need to ensure that the next generation has the skills and knowledge to meet these challenges.
We also recognise that young people may not always be aware of the breadth of opportunities construction offers. Beyond the roles most commonly associated with building sites, there are careers in manufacturing, engineering, technical design, logistics and commercial functions, each playing an important part in delivering successful projects.
By opening our doors and sharing our experience, we hope to help young people see these possibilities for themselves. We also value the opportunity to engage with fresh perspectives and give participants a better understanding of the opportunities, challenges and innovations shaping our industry.
Initiatives such as our apprentice and student days are one way we can contribute to this, helping bridge the gap between education and the workplace while encouraging more young people to consider a career in construction.

Looking towards our 80th anniversary and beyond
Having operated since 1947, we’re proud of the experience, knowledge and relationships we’ve built over almost eight decades in the precast concrete industry.
As we approach our 80th anniversary, however, we’re conscious that our future success depends on more than the products we manufacture today. It also depends on how we invest in people, share our knowledge and support the development of the skills our industry will need in the years ahead.
Future-proofing construction means looking ahead, embracing change and ensuring that the next generation has the opportunity to learn from those who have come before them, while bringing their own ideas and ambitions to the sector.
As we look towards 80 years of Milbank and beyond, inspiring the next generation is an important part of how we see our role in the industry’s future. By sharing our knowledge, creating meaningful experiences and encouraging young people to explore construction careers, we can all play a part in building a stronger, more sustainable industry for generations to come.
